⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character:Leonardo Watch
Age:~22 (estimated, past US legal drinking age, which is 21)
Canon: Blood Blockade Battlefront / Kekkai Sensen (anime, with some manga supplement)
Canon Point: In the middle of episode 10 when Leo, Zapp and Zed are trying to get lunch. They hit such a terrible string of restaurants with inedible food that Leo becomes so hungry and desperate he starts hallucinating a diety named The God of Chow

Background: Leonardo Watch was an ordinary young man. He has a mom, a dad, and a strong willed paraplegic younger sister named Michella. Three years ago, New York city was engulfed in a thick fog and the city became a meeting point between the Alterworld and our world. Renamed to Hellsalem’s Lot, the city became home to all manner of humans, Beyondians, and things that can’t be described. All that had nothing to do with regular ol’ Leonardo Watch until his family brought them there under pretense of a vacation; the real reason was they hoped that “city where miracles regularly occurred” held a cure for Michella’s legs. Instead, a mysterious entity gave him and Michella the choice of one gaining the “All Seeing Eyes of God” in exchange for the other’s sight. While Leo was paralyzed by fear, she agreed to sacrifice her eyesight and as a result, Leo gained the All Seeing Eyes.

Leo chose to remain in the city in hopes of finding a lead to restoring his sister's sight. After weeks spent mostly surviving off coffee refills and rebuffing nosy questions from the waitress at his usual diner, a chain of events starting with getting his camera stolen by a Sonic Speed Monkey led Leo to finding his first lead, Libra - the secret organization tasked with keeping the balance in Hellsalem’s Lot. Taking advantage of being mistaken for a new recruit (a stunt which Leo soon begged forgiveness for after he was easily exposed), Leo is brought into their headquarters to meet their leader, Klaus. Before Leo would make his case, the entire city is forcibly made to play a game by its resident demon-with-too-much-time-on-his-hands, King of Depravity, Femt, to prevent the two demons that he set loose in the city from uniting. The first demon is out in the city looking for its companion; The second is only comes out of a portal in intervals. Unlucky (or is it lucky) for Leonardo Watch, the portal seems to coming out of the monkey that he brought into Libra. But wait, is it really? Before the portal opened, Leonardo noticed something peculiar with the monkey, and Libra’s leader was quick to realize out of everyone, only Leo was the one to see the attack coming. Leo admits to their leader about the reason he needed their help and the circumstances that led to him gaining the eyes. Leo was given a gun to shoot the monkey - something that anyone else in Hellsalem’s Lot would’ve done easily, which as it turns out, Femt was banking on (killing the monkey would’ve actually been catastrophic, releasing the demon from its portal) - but taking an innocent life wasn’t something Leo was comfortable doing if he could help it. Leo was a rarity in Hellsalem’s Lot - he was a normal person. Leo spared the monkey and destroyed the true culprit, which was actually a flea, before it was too late.

Since then Leo and his eyes have been making themselves useful to Libra. He foiled a human cannibalism smuggling ring which was operating under a magical glamor that had everyone else fooled. He’s also essential in Libra’s fight against Blood Breed (vampires) who can only be sealed using their true names, something that Leo can conveniently see.

When Leo isn’t specifically helping out Libra, he’s working part time delivering pizzas and quickly adapting to normal life in Hellsalem’s Lot, where the abnormal becomes normal. He’s also made a variety of friends that he likes to spend time with and retain a sense of normalcy such as White, a mysterious, cute self-declared ghost-but-really-hospital-patient who easily charmed the-lacking-in-women-experience Leo, her twin brother Black, a kindred spirit in the "my younger sister is so much stronger than me" club, and of course, his faithful pet monkey Sonic who has been by his side ever since Leo spared his life.

Personality:
This city is as crowded and messy as it’s always been; a noisy city, where abnormal is normal. I’ve managed to muddle through up until now. Living out the worst and the best days of my life. A year ago, before I left you behind, I saw myself as worthless, someone who is insignificant in the grand scheme of the world. Just another powerless, idealistic little man you can find on any street and any city. My feelings haven’t changed much since then, but every once in a while, i get a faint glimmer those feelings aren’t true. I want to tell you all of the reasons why I’ve gone to think differently. I want to tell you what I’ve seen, what I’ve felt, and above all else about the people that I’ve met in the city. -- Leonardo Watch, episode 1 opening monologue

If you were to ask Leonardo Watch to describe himself, he would likely say he is nothing special. He takes absolutely no pride in his special gift because it came at a grave cost - his sister’s sight. Take away the eyes, and Leo is a normal person. But it’s actually Leo’s qualities as a normal person, not his most valuable “asset”, that make him so admirable. Leo's in the slow process about realizing that about himself. Being in Hellsalem’s Lot changes him, having him exhibit more of his good points as he grows more accustomed to the city, its inhabitants, and the danger which makes him a stronger and better person.

Leo is a great older brother, but his tendency to be hard on himself and his guilt fail to make him see that. Leo’s greatest regret is failing to uphold his role as older brother to protect his little sister. Since they were young, he was Michella’s “Tortoise Knight”; yet in the critical moment, he froze and she sacrificed her sight for him. He blames his cowardliness for what happened to her, and since then he has been trying to make things right by finding a way to restore her eyesight. Even in her absence, Leo is still trying his best to act like responsible older brother; in addition to looking for leads for her cure, he sends his part-time earnings home to her. In Michella’s mind, Leo never stopped being a good brother to her. She calls him “Tortoise Knight” not as an insult or any false grandeur - it’s because tortoises can’t walk backwards. She knows Leo might struggle and complain along the way, but he moves forward -- Michella understands Leo’s strength of character perfectly.

In a city where there’s scammers, muggers, and villains on every corner, Leo’s kindness is a rarity. Be good to him, and he’ll be good to you; it’s a simple policy and it doesn’t matter whether they’re Human or Beyondian, something that’s unusual because Beyondians are considered by some to be second class citizens (Hellsalem’s Lot is a place where the abnormal becomes the normal -- namely, people quickly adapt to becoming indifferent). It’s Leo’s sympathy and kindness for the underdog that led him to become friends with two of his Beyondian friends in the first place; he doesn’t like seeing people ripped off and treated badly. Despite being a largely unconfrontational person - the type who will backtrack and apologize even at the expense of his own pride, Leo is fiercely loyal when it comes to helping out a friend and it is one of the rare times Leo might resort to force. Whether it’s responsibility to Michella or to a friend, Leo believes in doing the right thing.

Leo’s genuine personality and and lack of malice in his actions makes him easy to get along with. Leo’s a honest, transparent person and he shows his true feelings in his expressions; if he thinks someone’s being annoying or a situation is ridiculous, he’ll voice it with a snarky, but lacking ill-will, comment. Compliments make him embarrassed and he might become bashful and deny it. It’s his honesty and earnestness (not to mention small stature) that make him a fun target to tease and bully. Still, Leo’s not a pushover, and he’ll voice his displeasure, especially in regards to his terrible co-worker, Zapp, who is one of the rare people which Leo has no qualms about being an ass to. Zapp’s a crook and a bully, who from the very beginning was making Leo’s life difficult, so really, he has it all coming to him and Leo might even enjoy some schadenfreude when Zapp gets his comeuppance time to time. Still, Leo is harmless, so the most he’ll ever do is just gripe and dish out sick burns (although really, it’s all true) and then they’ll grab some lunch together because Leo’s a nice guy.

Abilities: As a regular ol’ person, Leonardo Watch is pretty much shrimpy and won’t be able to hold himself in a fight. As a the possessor of the All Seeing Eyes of God… he still won’t be able to hold himself in a fight. Leo’s abilities are more on the side of non-combatant, but they’re arguably more useful than any amount of muscle power.

In general, Leo can see minute details and follow speeds that are too quick for human eyes. His eyes see 'The Truth' of the world which renders illusions useless against him and even if individuals looks entirely human, he can spot auras and identify them. Leo can also share and manipulate field of visions which can be helpful for reconnaissance or to momentarily stun an opponent by wildly altering their vision to the point of nausea.

(Only in the manga so far: Leo can see past events experienced by looking into another person’s eyes)

All of Leo’s abilities tire him out when he’s actively using them and his eyes “overheat” under extended use. Due to his personality (his eyes aren’t some parlour trick) and practical reasons (it’s tiring and he keeps them a secret), he only uses them out of necessity.

Alignment: Thras
Leo's inability to act when he gained the All Seeing Eyes of God is his greatest shame and he considers himself a coward for that. However, Leo is a brave person. Leo’s just not a person with a lot of bravado; when he’s scared, it shows. However, despite his fear, he still pushes forward. It’s a quiet sort of bravery that he’s not even aware that he has

Other: Leo's eyes are very abnormal in appearance so as his icons indicate his eye are closed or near-closed 99% of the time, but even so he can't help seeing things that normal people can't see. Leo carries around a digital camera which he takes pictures of his surroundings which is a habit (and possibly to verify if what's there is really there.)
